Arranging your living room furniture isn’t exactly rocket science. You put the biggest piece from your furniture sets against the wall, directed towards the focal point, and arrange the rest of the living room furniture around it. You leave about a foot of space between the furniture and the wall, and about three or four feet of space between each piece of living room furniture. And you don’t block any doorways, allowing people to come and go freely.
See? Not hard.
However, that’s not to say that you can’t mess up when arranging your living room furniture. There are certain rules you need to abide by, and if you break them, you simply won’t be able to enjoy the space as much as you should.
Here are a few of the unwritten rules of modern home furnishing you must not break.
The Room Must Be Evenly Lit.
Lighting is one of the most important — but often overlooked — aspects of your living room. Instead of relying on one central light source, spread table lamps and floor lamps across the space so that everything is balanced. Pay special attention to corners, too, and make sure that each gets equal attention.
Area Rugs Needs to Be Placed Under Your Living Room Furniture.
If you have an area rug, make sure you put it underneath your living room furniture part of the ways. Put the front legs of the furniture on top of it, but not the back ones. It’s also important to make sure that the rug is underneath more than just the sofa, too, otherwise it’ll look disconnected. Putting multiple pieces of living room furniture on top of your area rug will create a cohesive looking design.
Coffee Tables Should Be Sized Properly.
Believe it or not, you can get the wrong coffee table for your living room. Its height should be lower than the seating area of your sofa, and the chairs around it, but only slightly. The length of the coffee table should also be about two-thirds the length of your sofa. Anything too big will look awkward, and anything too small will make everything look oddly large.
